Overview
The breath-taking variety and beauty of South Africa make it the most southern sovereign state in Africa. With a total land size of 471,443 square kilometres, it ranks as the world’s 25th biggest nation. The Indian Ocean forms its southern and eastern borders, while the Atlantic Ocean forms its western boundary. Its neighbours are Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. South Africa is home to three capital cities: Cape Town, Pretoria, and Bloemfontein. The most popular tourist spots in Cape Town are Table Mountain, Robben Island, Signal Hill, and the Cape Peninsula. Travelers from far and wide go to South Africa to see the penguins waddling on The Cape and hippos in the Limpopo River. Some of South Africa’s other must-see attractions are the Namakwa wildflowers, the Kalahari desert, and the Kruger National Park lion-buffalo-crocodile fight. Simangaliso Wetland Park is a must-visit as it is home to no less than five unique ecosystems. It is a magnet for zebras and dolphins alike. While Johannesburg is home to the country’s financial and entertainment hubs, Durban is known for its exciting nightlife, beautiful beaches, and diverse cultural population. Pretoria, South Africa, is an ideal vacation spot for history buffs and landmark seekers. In addition to theatres and concert halls, it is home to a large number of foreign embassies. Among them all, Bloemfontein—the City of Roses—is the most inviting. The city of Kimberley, based on diamonds, is indelible. Among its attractions are the Great Hole of Kimberley and the Kimberley Mine Museum. South Africa, with a population of more than 52.98 million, is a melting pot of cultures and ethnicities. Afrikaans, English, Swazi, Tswana, Northern Sotho, Ndebele, Sotho, Tsonga, Xhosa, Venda, and Zulu are the eleven official languages of South Africa. While everyone’s native tongue is equally valid, some do have more speakers than others. Some unofficial languages are also recognized by the government. These include, but are not limited to, South African Sign Language, Nama, Phuthi, and Khoe. About three-quarters of South Africa’s population identifies as Christian. The rest of the population is made up of religious groups, including Muslims, Hindus, Jews, and others. When it comes to cultural heritage, the nation proudly displays artifacts from a period of 75,000 years ago, which are among the world’s oldest. Drakensberg is home to a few of them. Soccer, rugby, and cricket are the most watched sports in the world. Cultures from all around the world have come together in one nation. Therefore, its food is equally known for its diversity. Traditional South African meat and bread preparation involves braai, or BBQ. The Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Barrydale valleys are home to some of the world’s finest vineyards, making this region a leading wine producer as well.
