The peninsula in Southeast Asia is home to South Korea, formerly known as the Republic of Korea (ROK). The nation’s mountainous landscapes dotted with cherry trees, verdant paddy fields, and old Buddhist temples are only the beginning of what this country has to offer. The country is also home to many verdant tropical islands and picturesque fishing communities along its coastline. Along with its many natural wonders, South Korea is home to twenty national parks. Treks to its rugged mountain peaks are fun in the summer, and in the winter, you may choose from many groomed ski runs. Situated on an expansive 100,032 square kilometres, the nation is bordered to the west by the Yellow Sea, the east by the Sea of Japan, and to the south by the Korea Strait and the East China Sea. There are basically four different parts in South Korea. Coastal plains, river basins, and rolling hills characterize the western region; high mountain ranges and narrow coastal plains mark the eastern region; mountains and valleys dominate the southwest region; and the broad basin of the Nakdong River dominates the southeast region. Beside the southern and western shores, there are around 3,000 islands, the most of which are uninhabited. The island of Jeju-do is home to South Korea’s highest peak, Hallasan, an extinct volcano that stands at 6,398 feet above sea level. The island is 1850 sq km, making it the biggest in the nation. Also, to the east and south of the nation are a few islands. In spite of its troubled past, South Korea is now a global leader in technology and the economy, serving as a remarkable example of the power of a nation and its people.
