There are currently over 450 of us from 70+ nationalities who represent country experts, lawyers journalists, and attorneys to protect those most in need, such as vulnerable minorities or civilians during war, children in dire need, or refugees seeking safety and relief. As our efforts are focused on government, armies, and companies we encourage them to alter or enforce laws, policies, and procedures accordingly. To uphold our integrity we refuse government support as donations; instead, we carefully consider their alignment with our mission, ideals, and policy before accepting. Written and verbal communication abilities with an excellent command of English must also be present.<br \/>\nProficiency in multiple languages besides English is highly valued, as is familiarity with areas or countries in which human rights violations take place.<br \/>\nSelf-motivation, multi-tasking efficiently, and planning skills as well as being able to perform under pressure are crucial abilities that should not be neglected.<br \/>\nBe proactive and persistent while possessing exceptional analytical capabilities; think critically and strategically; have excellent editing abilities, persevere in maintaining HRW\u2019s standard methodology \u2013 these traits are necessary.<br \/>\nCommunication within HRW, as well as external parties, is critical, including with outside vendors and collaborators. Being sensitive and accommodating of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and orientations is an absolute requirement for success.<br \/>\nAn ability to make rational and appropriate choices when performing tasks is indispensable.<br \/>\nHow much education must a candidate meet before being considered eligible to apply for grants?<br \/>\nTo qualify for this Sandler Fellowship, prospective fellows should hold either an existing JD at Columbia Law School or expect to have it awarded before June of 2023 (LLMs are ineligible).<br \/>\nFinberg Fellowship applicants who meet these qualifications should hold either an advanced (graduate) degree in journalism, law and international relations, or another relevant field by June 20, 2023, or have graduated. Students holding LL.B degrees or advanced degrees from different fields are also considered for eligibility.<br \/>\nCandidates wishing to receive an Aryeh Neier fellowship must possess at least a J.D. from one of the US law schools or plan on earning it before June of 2023.<\/p>\n<h3>International Human Rights Fellowships Watch currently offers:<\/h3>\n<p>Alan R. and Barbara D. Finberg Fellowship was established to commemorate Alan and Barbara Finberg\u2019s early support of Human Rights Watch (HRW) through early patronage of universities around the world. It offers advanced degrees or awards by June 30th, 2023 that relate to journalism, law\/international relations\/local studies, or any related fields from these institutions \u2013 or possibly those holding an LLB degree with relevant subjects as a qualifier if applicable). Candidates holding other related qualifications could also be assessed.<br \/>\nLeonard H. Sandler Fellowship was created in memory of Leonard H. Sandler, a 1950 Columbia Law alum who made significant strides toward liberties and civil rights during his long legal career. This fellowship will support anyone holding either their JD from Columbia Law School by June 30, 2023; alternatively, they must receive it before this date.<br \/>\nAs part of Aryeh Neier\u2019s legacy as executive director for both Human Rights Watch and ACLU, this two-year fellowship (one at HRW and an additional year with ACLU) offers legal graduates who will complete US law schools by June 2023 an opportunity for employment with these organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Job Description<br \/>\nHuman Rights Watch Fellows typically dedicate an entire year of full-time work at either its New York or Washington offices; in some instances, other areas could also be explored. The program commences September 20, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Fellows stay abreast of global human rights developments, conduct investigations on the ground and produce reports or other materials related to human rights issues as well as engage in media advocacy aimed at both combating abuses of rights as well as mitigating their impact.<\/p>\n<p>Past fellows have conducted extensive research and campaigning work across a broad spectrum of issues in different parts of the globe, from international alternatives to detention for immigration; worker rights of migrants within Gulf countries; barriers in secondary education for Syrian refugees living in Jordan as well as child labor in traditional gold mining in Tanzania that is endangering local communities as well as threats posed to those communities by mining facilities not being rehabilitated in South Africa and privatizing public housing within New York City are just a few examples of issues addressed by past fellows.<\/p>\n<p>Human Rights Watch will ensure Fellows receive training and guidance as well as regularly scheduled feedback with detailed advice for professional growth.
