Programs Offered by DESY Summer Student Program 2023-2024:
Photon Science (only in Hamburg)
Students form groups of photon science at DESY involved in applied and fundamental research in the areas of biology, physics as well as chemistry, crystallography materials science and geoological sciences. Students will be working as part of the European XFEL program. This includes taking part in the making and implementing measurements, evaluating the data collected, as well as technical enhancements to the instrumentation.
A1. Nanoscience and solid-state physics
Students will be able to work across a wide range of subjects that include the creation of ultra-clean, well-defined surfaces, to the development of nanostructures using molecular beam epitaxy , sputtering and molecular beams and methods for the analysis of these structures using surface sensitive Diffraction of X-rays with conventional instruments for analysis of surfaces, including scan electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopes and X-ray photoelectron spectrum. In further theoretical research, an introduction to the diffraction analysis techniques is given.
A2. Molecular sciences:
Students are part of groups that conduct research in biology, chemistry and physics, with the goal of unraveling the structure-function relation of molecular science. Research involves the study of the molecular structure and dynamic of systems that range from tiny molecules through nano-objects to macromolecules in biological systems and viruses as well as cells. These experiments push limits of spatial and temporal resolution using novel X-ray, electron, or ultrashort-laser-pulse sources. The projects include sample preparation, imaging tests as well as data analysis.
A3. Soft-matter sciences:
Students are taught methods to analyze the nature and behavior of complicated glasses and liquids like small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) employing coherent X-ray beams and X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) and cross-correlation analysis of X-rays (XCCA). Additionally, they create colloidal samples within our lab for chemistry. Experiments with laser scattering setups on self-synthesized colloidal samples and analysing and interpreting the results will allow them to improve their programming abilities as well as to critically discussion of results from experiments.
A4. The development of experimental techniques:
Students are part of groups that develop innovative experimental methods, such as scattering and diffraction imaging, spectroscopy, and diffraction. The unique capability of X-rays in the form of probes allow the examination of a specimen in specific samples, such as pressure cells or chemical reactors. Topics covered include ultrafast time-resolved diffraction or in-situ scattering techniques, imaging , and microscopy using coherent X-rays tomography, X-ray optics , scanning microscopy, nanofocusing and microspectroscopy.
A5. Lasers and optics
Students are part of groups that develop laser sources, diagnostics and measurement methods as well as their application. The topics covered are diverse of ultrafast lasers, high-power as well as high-energy lasers Free-electron Laser (FEL) seeds, powerful fields optical pulse synthesizing, frequency combs, phase stable laser sources laser spectroscopy, powerful field THz pulse studies the X-ray pulse diagnostics method High order harmonic generation, attosecond science, as well as ultra-fast nano-optics. Projects cover electronic devices, lasers, programming as well as data analysis and simulations.
A6. Theory and Computing:
Theory research projects have a direct relationship to experiments or the development of innovative methods to understand the physical properties of matter. The use of a wide range of numerical methods and a deep knowledge of the theory behind it is essential. Students are challenged to solve this Schrodinger equation that describes highly excited systems of many electrons and The timing-dependent Schrodinger equation to describe dynamical processes; methods for nonperturbative radiation-matter interaction; quantum-chemical simulations; as well as the creation of algorithms to tackle specific imaging and photon science issues.
