Rutherford scholarship was established in honor the late Alexander Rutherford, who had the distinction of being the first Albertan premier and minister of Education. He was renowned for his tireless support of public education, especially that of the University of Alberta and his active involvement in community affairs.
To acknowledge and recognize the excellence in academics of students in the senior years of high school and to encourage students to pursue higher education.

Rutherford scholarship 2023-2024 Benefits:
Students are eligible to receive a maximum of $2500 towards their post-secondary education with Alexander Rutherford Scholarships. These scholarships are given to students who enroll in post-secondary institutions , and have an average of 80% in five subjects that are designated in the grades of 11, 10, and 12. Each grade is independently assessed. CTS courses can be used to fulfill the requirements for eligibility for the Grades 10 and 11.. Rutherford scholarship 2023-2024 Eligibility Criteria:
Make an application when your official transcript from high school marks are made available, and also when you’re enrolled full-time in post-secondary education. High school transcript requirements marks may differ.
To be eligible for this scholarship you must also satisfy the following eligibility requirements:
You must be the Canadian Citizen, permanent resident of Canada or a Protected Person under
the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, (Visa students are not ineligible).
You must be an Alberta resident. To be considered to be an Alberta resident, the following requirements must be met:
One parent, or guardian legal has to maintain permanent residence in Canada for at least 12 consecutive consecutive months immediately prior to the start of the study program;
the applicant has resided permanently in Alberta for at least 12 months prior to beginning a course of study.
An applicant cannot be awarded a scholarship in relation to any grade provided that the his parent(s)/legal guardian resided in Alberta during the entire duration of the grade.
High school graduation was by or on after September 30, 1980.
You must be enrolled in a full load of courses in a specifically designed undergraduate post-secondary or apprenticeship program of more than one year length.
You will only be granted this Alexander Rutherford scholarship once.
Selection
A student must be able to show an average of at least a combined average that is based on five courses that must be at the very least one grade. 10th, 11th, or 12 based on:
Alberta Residents
Marks and courses on the official transcript from Alberta of High School Achievement
Completed High School Outside Alberta
Marks and courses that are on the official transcript of high school obtained in a different province
Students are automatically eligible for the following awards when they submit an application for Alexander Rutherford Scholarship. The application is not to be considered for these awards.

Application Procedure For Rutherford scholarship 2023-2024:
1- You must ensure that you meet all Rutherford eligibility requirements for scholarships prior to applying.
2- Visit the Alberta student aid portal to sign up for an account.
3- Choose The Alexander Rutherford scholarship and fill the application form in with all required documents and current information.
4- Check that all the information you entered is correct, then fill out an application.
5- The application is evaluated by the scholarship committee, and they will notify you via email after they have approved your application.

High School Transcript Marks:
Only marks that are recorded by the official Alberta Transcript of High School Achievement are valid.
You do not have to provide an official transcript. Student Aid will be able to receive the official grades by Alberta Education.
Border Communities
Students who attend the below high schools do NOT get access to Alberta Diploma marks. Students should be aware of outside-of-province schools below.

Upgrading Courses
Credit courses at high school that are being upgraded which appear as part of an Alberta High School Transcript of Achievement is accepted. General Education Development (GED) examination marks are not accepted.
Take into consideration completing your upgrade high school credits prior to applying. This is because you will only apply once and you’ll need to submit the highest score.
Out-of-Province
Students who have completed the high school in another province other than Alberta must provide the official transcripts of their marks from high school for the province in which they reside.
