The McDonald Fellowships enable early career multiple research scientists from low and middle-income nations to work in an academic institution outside of their home country. We’re open to proposals for local or virtual projects that beat the travel restrictions created by the COVID-19 virus. When participating in the virtual or visit project, participants can either develop expertise or complete part in joint research initiatives.
After our award ceremony, we hope that applicants to be able to make use of the newly-developed knowledge and networks to conduct MS research or patient treatment in low or middle-income nations.
The McDonald Fellowships is comprised of two years of funding, which is around PS30,000 GBP each year, for living and travel expenses, as well as an additional payment of up to PS2,000 GBP each year to the institution hosting the fellowship. *For 2023, we will be more flexible in the allocation of funds when virtual projects are being proposed.
As long as there is no danger of travel during the outbreak, we anticipate that a portion of the second-year grant awarded to this host organization will pay for the costs of the applicant to attend the annual conference that is held by ECTRIMS The European Committee for Treatment and Research in MS.
One Fellowship is given in conjunction in partnership with ECTRIMS and is also known as The McFarland Fellowship of MSIF and ECTRIMS.
A second Fellowship is offered by MSIF in collaboration with its affiliate, ARSEP, The Foundation pour l’Aide a la Recherche sur la Sclerose En Plaques. This is called MSIF-ARSEP McDonald Fellowship.

Further Requirements:
In 2023, the McDonald Fellowships requirements for applicants were revised. Because of travel limitations, we are looking at alternative methods to conduct research projects that allow flexibility regarding the way the Fellowship is used, as well as the time and where the research project will be completed.
We encourage prospective applicants to collaborate with the hosts they would like to host on possible solutions.
A project can include:
A) in a hospital/research institute outside of the country, if travel permits permit (as in the previous years)
B) at a hospital/research institute in your country of residence
C) Virtual projects, whether in total or part, with the host institution’s mentoring*
Virtual projects are feasible if both the applicant and host can prove that they have the necessary guidance throughout the project.
Projects are only approved if there is a low risk of travel and the project is executed safely with no risks to the applicant there are enough resources and supervision in place to allow the project to occur and the project is of enough value to the person applying.
Applications will be revised to include a question requiring applicants to draft an outline of how they will carry out the work or portion of the job if not able to travel.
The McDonald Fellowships will be subject to a condition to start no later than 2023.
